Hakeem Jeffries distances himself from scandal-hit Democrat Graham Platner

Jeffries Keeps His Distance

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries took a careful route on Sunday when Fox News asked him about Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Platner. Instead of stepping in with a full defense, Jeffries said Platner would have to speak for himself as the campaign faces a growing pile of controversies. That is political code for, “I am not jumping into this mess with both feet,” which, frankly, is usually a wise move when the headlines are already doing the talking.

Questions Keep Piling Up

Platner, a Marine veteran and oyster farmer running for the U.S. Senate in Maine, has been under heavy scrutiny for several months. Reports have centered on explicit messages, allegations from former partners, a tattoo critics say resembles a Nazi-era symbol, and old social media posts that resurfaced during the campaign. Platner has denied earlier accusations, and he has said the tattoo was gotten while he was drunk during a trip to Croatia, that he did not know its meaning at the time, and that he later covered it up. The kind of answer that may calm some voters, though others will likely still ask why a grown man is getting permanent ink while sightseeing and making questionable choices in the same trip.

Jeffries Talks Principles, Not Details

When pressed about allegations involving former girlfriends, Jeffries said he had not followed every detail closely, but stressed that violence against women is unacceptable. He called it a red line and said accusers should be treated with dignity and respect. On Platner’s comments about Sen. Susan Collins and AIPAC, Jeffries shifted to a broader message about antisemitism, saying it should not be a partisan issue and that America must work to crush hatred of all kinds. He gave a strong statement, but not much in the way of help for Platner, which tells you plenty about where this story stands inside Democratic circles.

Polling Still Shows Platner Ahead

Even with the controversy, Platner still holds a lead in the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, where he is up 7.4 points over Collins. Still, Maine has a habit of humbling people who trust polls a little too much, and Collins has beaten expectations before in Senate races. That is why this contest remains one of the most closely watched of the 2026 cycle. Voters are not just choosing between two candidates. They are also deciding how much baggage they are willing to carry into November.
