National Mall lawn vandalized with threat
The National Mall, one of the most visible public spaces in the country, was vandalized Thursday with grass markings that appeared to read “86 47.” The message was carved into the lawn by turning sections of the grass brown, leaving a crude stain on the green field near the Washington Monument. It is still not clear how the etchings were made, which is a nice little reminder that some people apparently use their free time to threaten the President and ruin taxpayer property at the same time.
Park Police launch investigation
U.S. Park Police are investigating the incident, and the Department of the Interior said the vandalism will not be tolerated. In a statement to Fox News, the department said any threat against the President is taken very seriously and that Park Police will work to identify and hold the responsible parties accountable. DC photographer Andrew Leyden also reported a large police presence at the scene. The response makes sense, because when someone turns a national landmark into a political billboard, law enforcement should not treat it like a harmless prank.
Security concerns remain high
The vandalism comes during a tense period for presidential security after the attempted assassination of President Trump at the White House Correspondents’ Association dinner in April. The same “86 47” message has already drawn attention in the case of former FBI Director James Comey, who posted it on Instagram and was later indicted by a grand jury in the Eastern District of North Carolina on two felony counts for threatening to kill the President of the United States. That case is still ongoing, and the lead federal prosecutor on it has since resigned, which only adds more questions to an already messy picture.
