Trump Rallygoer’s Death Shirt Draws Jonestown Massacre Comparison on Fox News

A Grim Message at a Trump Rally

A man identified by Fox News as Tom appeared at Donald Trump’s rally in Rock Hill, South Carolina, on Thursday wearing a shirt marked “Death.” Speaking with Fox reporter Lucas Tomlinson, Tom said he had been too young in the late 1970s to travel to South America for the Jonestown Massacre. He then said the rally was as close as he would ever get to that event. That is a remarkably grim reason to show up at a campaign event.

What Tom Told Fox News

Tomlinson asked why he was there that morning. Tom answered, “Well, when in the late ’70s, I was a little too young to get involved and go to South America for the Jonestown Massacre.” He added, “But this is as close as I’ll ever get, so that’s why I’m here.” Tomlinson repeated the name of the massacre, apparently seeking clarification. Tom did not walk the comment back. Instead, he replied, “That’s right. There’s nothing like seeing a cult right up front, man.”

The Gateway Pundit interpreted the remarks as an apparent call for a mass-casualty event and said Tom appeared to be calling for the deaths of thousands of Trump supporters. The exchange left viewers with a clear question: Was Tom describing the Trump rally as a cult gathering, or was he invoking the violence associated with Jonestown in a threatening way? Either way, those were not casual remarks.

Why the Jonestown Reference Is So Alarming

The Jonestown Massacre was the 1978 mass murder-suicide involving followers of Jim Jones and the Peoples Temple cult in Guyana. The phrase carries the memory of a mass death event. Using it at a political rally while wearing a shirt that read “Death” naturally made the exchange more alarming. Tomlinson even asked, “The Jonestown Massacre?” after the first answer, giving Tom another chance to clarify. Tom instead repeated the comparison and described the people gathered as a cult.

Political disagreement is normal in America. Bringing up a notorious tragedy while discussing a live political crowd is something else entirely. Free speech protects the ability to make offensive statements, but it does not require everyone else to pretend the words were harmless.

Fox News Puts the Exchange on Air

Fox News aired the exchange with Tomlinson, who asked Tom why he was at the rally. The Gateway Pundit criticized that decision and has also criticized what it called Tomlinson’s poor coverage of Trump on the midterm campaign trail. The article pointed to a recent Texas encounter in which a Trump rally attendee called Fox News “fake” directly to Tomlinson’s face. Tomlinson responded awkwardly, “Okay, let’s keep it going,” according to the report.

That earlier confrontation was included as context for the outlet’s broader criticism of Tomlinson’s reporting. This latest segment provides another reason for that criticism, at least in the outlet’s view: a man making an alarming Jonestown reference was given a live microphone, turning the moment into television content. Cable news loves a spectacle. Sometimes it should also recognize when a spectacle is a warning sign.
