James Talarico Posts Texas Democrats’ Highest Vote Total Since 2016

Texas Just Delivered a Massive Margin Shift

In 2024, Donald Trump carried Texas by approximately 13.7%, collecting 6,393,597 votes. Two years later, James Talarico, a newcomer to national politics, won a statewide Texas Senate race by about 12%. That works out to roughly a 26-point swing in the Democratic versus Republican margins. The size of that change matters, even if it does not tell us whether voters were backing Talarico, rejecting Ken Paxton, or sending a message to Republicans.

Totals That Stand Out

The turnout comparisons make the result even harder to ignore. The report says Talarico received more than half a million votes above Kamala Harris’s 2024 total. Despite major population and voter-roll growth over eight years, Paxton received slightly fewer votes than Ted Cruz did in 2018. Talarico also topped the vote totals of all six previous Democratic candidates since 2016, including three presidential races, while Paxton fell below every one of the six Republican candidates in the comparison. Those are eye-catching numbers, but raw totals from different election years have limits and cannot prove what motivated individual voters.

Paxton’s Record Became a Campaign Issue

Several possible explanations are offered, and the article makes clear they are not all endorsed. One points to years of controversy surrounding Paxton. It also highlights the 2023 Texas House fight, when Republican Speaker Dade Phelan appointed Democrats rather than Republicans to chair powerful committees. That led to the failed attempt to impeach Paxton. Whatever one thinks of that battle, it gave Talarico an opening to appeal beyond the usual Democratic base. Politics rarely misses a chance to turn old intraparty fights into fresh campaign material.

Republican Divisions Left Paxton Vulnerable

Paxton had already defeated incumbent Republican Senator John Cornyn, but concerns about his general-election appeal did not disappear. Some Cornyn supporters in the Dallas-Fort Worth suburbs may have crossed over, stayed home, or voted Republican in other races while withholding support from Paxton. The account notes that data on this point is still pending, so it remains a possible explanation rather than a settled fact. Party divisions can make any contest harder when an opponent is ready to take advantage.

Talarico Ran on Affordability and Education

Talarico focused on affordability, public education, and the influence of wealthy political donors. Pundits also pointed to contradictions in his religious beliefs, yet the message helped separate his campaign from a standard party script. His campaign raised exceptionally large sums, with 61% coming from outside Texas. Paxton still outspent Talarico by 36%, showing that cash alone did not settle the race. Voters may have been responding to the message, the opponent, the national mood, or some combination of all three.

National Mood and Changing Suburbs Mattered

Fox described the Democratic wave as larger than expected and as a rebuke to Trump and the economy. A poll cited in the account put Trump’s approval at 36%, while 74% of voters rated the economy negatively. The suburban map also shifted. The account says Texas suburbs have become less Republican, while 16 suburban counties grew from about one-fifth to nearly one-fourth of the state’s registered voter population over eight years. Those counties diversified twice as fast as the rest of Texas. People of color made up 40% of their population in 2014 and nearly half by 2024. Much of the growth came from other states, especially California, and the account says many newcomers came from states Kamala Harris carried in 2024.

Bush Family Support Added to the Surprise

The account also reports that relatives of former President George W. Bush actively supported Talarico over Paxton. Neil Bush publicly endorsed Talarico, while Barbara Pierce Bush was said to have made a donation. It suggests George W. Bush may have supported Talarico privately, but no public confirmation is provided.
