Local officials in North Carolina are outraged after a man involved in a tense standoff with police last week was revealed to be an illegal immigrant on a terror watch list.
The suspect, Awet Hagos, 32, had been residing in the state for the past six months after illegally entering the country, according to a statement released by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). Hagos is a citizen of Eritrea, a country in Africa, and had traveled to the United States from Haiti.
Upon running Hagos’ fingerprints, authorities discovered that he was listed on the terror watch list, sparking fear and concern amongst local law enforcement and government officials.
According to the News & Observer, an ICE representative stated that Hagos had originally entered the US as a non-immigrant in 2016, but had violated the terms of his admission.

The incident in question occurred on March 11, when Gates County Sheriff Ray Campbell received a report of a man firing a gun outside of a convenience store. When police arrived at the scene, they attempted to arrest the suspect, but he became aggressive and even attempted to disarm one of the officers.
After fleeing to a nearby camper, the suspect eventually tried to crawl out from underneath a neighboring home, where he was apprehended after a four-hour standoff. He was later identified as Hagos and was charged with multiple counts of assault, resisting arrest, and carrying a concealed weapon.
In response to this alarming incident, North Carolina Lieutenant Governor Mark Robinson, who is also a Republican candidate for governor, called for swift action and answers from President Joe Biden.
In a letter addressed to President Biden, Robinson stated that the situation raises a number of serious questions and demands urgent attention. He also expressed his concerns about how Hagos was able to enter the country, travel to North Carolina, and potentially other parts of the state undetected.

Robinson went on to mention the silence from the Biden administration regarding this matter, stating that even elected officials in Congress and the Senate have been unable to obtain any answers from the president.
The safety and security of American citizens is a top priority for government officials, and incidents like these highlight the need for tighter border control and stricter immigration policies. Local officials are calling on the Biden administration to take immediate action and provide answers and solutions to prevent situations like this from happening in the future.
