Marvel Comics has come under fire for its recent decision to have Nightcrawler, a fan-favorite character for many Christian fans, perform a lesbian wedding in an upcoming comic book due to be released in May. This move has sparked widespread criticism, with some even going as far as to say that Marvel Comics hates Christians. Science fiction author, Jon Del Arroz, took to social media to express his frustration, stating that the cover of the comic featuring Nightcrawler officiating the wedding is “insulting” and goes against the character’s Catholic faith and moral convictions.
Del Arroz elaborated on his thoughts in an article for Fandom Pulse, highlighting the fact that Nightcrawler is a Catholic priest and according to Catholic doctrine, same-sex relationships are considered to be a sin. Therefore, it is out of character for Nightcrawler to perform a ceremony that goes against his religious beliefs. The decision to have Nightcrawler perform this wedding is seen as anti-Christian and further perpetuates the trend of Marvel Comics neglecting to accurately represent Christian characters and their values.

Aside from the controversial decision to have Nightcrawler perform the wedding, the identities of the couple getting married are also causing concern. In recent years, Marvel has retconned Nightcrawler’s origin to have him be the product of two mothers, instead of a mother and a father. This change in character history has been met with backlash, as it seems to serve as a way for Marvel to push a certain agenda and cater to a specific audience.
Unfortunately, character retcons like this have become all too common in today’s comics. It seems that the purpose of these changes is to give activists a way to defend the portrayal of certain characters in other media forms, such as movies and video games. For example, when Black Cat, a long-time love interest of Spider-Man, was revealed to be bisexual in a recent comic, fans who disliked the change were ridiculed for not being “real comic fans” when the character was later portrayed this way in a video game.
This trend of retconning characters and gaslighting fans who disagree with these changes has been noticed by many in the comic book industry. The media, who should be holding comic publishers accountable, often fails to do so and instead praises these retcons as progressive and groundbreaking. This only adds fuel to the fire and encourages publishers to continue pushing their political agendas instead of focusing on creating authentic and well-written stories.

Ultimately, the decision to have Nightcrawler perform a lesbian wedding is just one example of the larger issue at hand. With more and more beloved characters being twisted and subverted to push certain political views, it’s clear that something needs to change in the comic book industry. Until then, we can only hope that true fans of comics will one day be the ones writing and covering these stories, instead of activists with their own agendas.
