Senator Hagerty: Voter ID Is Common Sense

What the SAVE Act Would Do

The SAVE Act, short for the Safeguard American Voter Eligibility Act, would require voters to show identification for federal elections. Senator Bill Hagerty explained on Sunday Morning Futures that the measure simply codifies basic rules many states already use, including his home state of Tennessee. The idea is plain and simple. If you are going to vote in a federal election you should be able to show you are who you say you are and that you are a U.S. citizen.

Public Support Is Overwhelming

Hagerty pointed out polls show more than 80 percent of Americans support voter ID laws. Even within the Democratic base a majority favors this common sense step. So the question is not whether voters back it. The question is why every Senate Democrat refuses to support it. Senator Hagerty called that political detachment from voters and argued lawmakers should listen to their constituents, not just party talking points.

Why Some Oppose It

Senator Hagerty did not mince words about the motives behind opposition. He blamed the Biden Administration and its policies at the border for creating a chaotic situation that could make elections less secure. Whether or not you agree with that assessment, Hagerty’s point is that legal and orderly voting protects every citizen. Voter ID is a straightforward method to restore confidence in election integrity and to raise public trust so more Americans feel secure about casting their ballots.

How the Senate Fight Could Play Out

The House passed the bill 218 to 213 and the measure now heads to the Senate where Democrats say they will use the filibuster to block it. Republicans may try a so called talking filibuster, a rarely used procedural path, to force debate. With Susan Collins joining GOP support Hagerty says Republicans have options and will explore every method to bring the bill to the floor. He believes passing voter ID would increase turnout because voters would trust the system more.
