Small business owner Marcy Landolfo was faced with a heartbreaking decision: close shop permanently as a result of relentless robberies. She made the announcement through a note posted on her store, Rains PDX, which explained all of the robberies and safety issues they had withstood, and the lack of anything done to help reimburse them since the third robbery.
“Our city is in peril,” the note read. “Small businesses (and large) cannot sustain doing business, in our city’s current state. We have no protection, or recourse, against the criminal behavior that goes unpunished. Do not be fooled into thinking that insurance companies cover losses. We have sustained 15 break-ins … we have not received any financial reimbursement since the 3rd.”
The owner of Rains PDx explained to KATU 2 that, due to the series of break-ins, “the shop cannot sustain those types of losses and stay in business,” adding that “no matter where you sit on the political spectrum, I think we can all agree that criminal behavior is criminal behavior and should not be tolerated.”
Sadly, the city of Portland, OR has been plagued with lawlessness, largely perpetuated by a lack of accountability from Democratic officials. Despite Mayor Wheeler’s office claiming it was working on a plan to help repair business shops, little to nothing has been done to address crime in the city. Rather, the Democratic party has enabled and even encouraged this lawlessness, labeling it as “peaceful protesting” while efforts to fill the black community with unchecked criminals run rampant. Now, more and more business owners are being made to take the same sad steps as Landolfo and permanently close their shops.
But, it speaks to a greater issue – the need for fairness, justice, and public safety. When cities fail to protect and represent their citizens, decisions like Landolfo’s not only bring economic and financial losses, but they also create an atmosphere where people feel unsafe, no longer part of the community, and unable to live freely.
No matter what the political views, criminal behavior should never be tolerated – especially if it affects the lives, safety, and livelihood of innocent citizens. It’s time for Democratic officials and their supporters to recognize this fact and take steps to bring law and order to their cities. This begins with holding lawbreakers accountable and giving business owners the protection they need to conduct business unhindered. Only then can we find a way to preserve the livelihoods that make cities vital places to call home.
