Patton Oswalt appeared on the television show The View to talk about his new show Manhunt, which takes a look at the hunt for John Wilkes Booth. During his interview, Oswalt brought up the often dramatic and negative narrative that the media likes to portray, referring to it as “the news business.” He argued that the media’s goal is to keep people fearful and glued to their screens, so they often exaggerate the severity of situations and make it seem like we are constantly on the “brink” of collapse. Oswalt reminded the audience that we have been through much worse in the past and have always managed to pull ourselves back from the edge, even with far less technology and knowledge than we have now.
Interestingly, the ladies of The View all agreed with Oswalt’s assessment, showing that they too are aware of the media’s tendency to sensationalize and exaggerate. Co-host Joy Behar chimed in, saying that technology is partly to blame for this constant state of panic. However, Oswalt argued that technology itself is not the issue, but rather how we use it. He compared it to an axe, which can be used for both good and bad purposes. He believes that we have the potential to use technology for good and pull ourselves back from the brink once again.
Despite making this argument, Oswalt himself couldn’t help but get caught up in the panic about the future. He recalled a joke that Jimmy Kimmel made about former President Trump at the Oscars, which he believes may have sparked his “supervillain origin story.”
Oswalt fears that Trump will use the laughter of the rich and famous at the correspondents’ dinner as motivation for vengeance in the 2024 presidential election. He still found Kimmel’s joke brilliant, but he couldn’t help but feel a little worried about the possible consequences.
Oswalt’s appearance on The View was a thought-provoking and insightful discussion about the media’s tendency to portray the world as being constantly on the brink of collapse. He reminded the audience that we have been through worse and have always managed to come back from the edge, even with less technology. While he believes that we have the potential to use technology for good, he also couldn’t help but join in on the panic about the future, showing that even those who recognize the media’s exaggerations can sometimes get caught up in them.
