Military officials conducting an investigation into the disappearance of an F-35 jet in South Carolina have announced the discovery of a debris field in Williamsburg County. While officials have not confirmed that the debris is from the missing aircraft, they are urging members of the community to avoid the area as they secure it. Command of the incident has now been transferred to the United States Marine Corps.
The pilot of the F-35, belonging to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, safely ejected from the plane on Sunday afternoon after a “mishap.” The pilot was then treated at a local medical center. Details of the investigation are still unknown as the Marine Corps works to “preserve the integrity of the investigative process.”
The situation has raised questions and concerns, with South Carolina Congresswoman Nancy Mace stating that she received a very uninformative briefing on the incident. Despite her attempts to gather more information, Mace expressed her frustration with the lack of answers from the USMC. “One of the shortest meetings I’ve ever had, because guess what, no one at the USMC sent over to brief me and my staff had any answers,” Mace wrote on X (formerly known as Twitter). “Shocker.”
In response to several recent Class-A aviation “mishaps” within the past six weeks, the Marine Corps has announced a two-day pause in operations to address aviation safety matters and discuss best practices. During this time, Marines will review and reinforce proper flight procedures, ground safety, maintenance, and combat readiness.
The Marine Corps emphasizes the importance of this stand-down in maintaining a high level of operational standardization and ensuring the safety of both their personnel and the public.
“This pause invests time and energy in reinforcing the Marine aviation community’s established policies, practices, and procedures in the interests of public safety, protecting our Marines and sailors, and ensuring the Marine Corps remains a ready and highly-trained fighting force,” said a Marine Corps spokesperson in a press release.

As the investigation into the F-35’s disappearance continues, the Marine Corps remains committed to upholding the highest standards of safety and readiness.
