White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre found herself in a heated exchange with a reporter on Wednesday as she denied that President Joe Biden referred to supporters of his Republican opponent, Donald Trump, as “garbage.” The comment in question came during a Zoom call on Tuesday, where Biden condemned comedian Tony Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Ricans being “a floating island of garbage” at a Sunday rally.
However, Jean-Pierre firmly denied that the president was referring to Trump supporters, stating, “He was regarding to the comedian, and I quote ‘I refer to the hateful rhetoric about Puerto Rico by Trump’s supporter at his Madison Square Garden rally as garbage, which is the only word I can think of to describe it … His demonization of Latinos is unconscionable, that’s all I meant to say.'” She added that the comments do not reflect who we are as a nation and that Biden does not view Trump supporters as “garbage.”
The press secretary emphasized that Biden will not tolerate hateful rhetoric and will call it out when he sees it. The reporter, Aamer Madhani from The Associated Press, pressed Jean-Pierre on whether the president regrets not being more precise with his language and for making the comment while Vice President Kamala Harris was giving her closing argument to the nation at the National Mall on Tuesday night.
Jean-Pierre responded by saying, “The president wanted to clarify because he understood that what he was saying was being taken out of context. So he wanted to be very clear about what he was trying to say.” She then read out the tweet and statement from Biden clarifying his comments and reiterating that he was referring to Hinchcliffe’s joke and not Trump supporters.
The incident occurred during Harris’ closing argument, where she called Trump an “unhinged” and “unstable” leader who would govern as a “fascist” if reelected on Nov. 5. This is not the first time Democrats have compared Trump to fascist leaders, with Biden’s former chief-of-staff John Kelly alleging that Trump “met the definition of a fascist.”
In 2016, former Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton famously referred to half of Trump supporters as a “basket of deplorables” and accused them of being “racist, sexist, homophobic, xenophobic [and] Islamophobic.”
The constant demonization and dehumanization of Trump supporters by the left is concerning and unfair. It only serves to further divide our nation and pit Americans against each other. These baseless accusations of fascism are merely attempts to silence and discredit anyone who does not align with their political views.
The fact that the Biden administration would try to twist his words to claim he was referring to Trump supporters as “garbage” is deeply troubling. It is a prime example of the dishonesty and manipulative tactics used by the left to push their agenda. We must reject this kind of divisive rhetoric and come together as a country, regardless of political beliefs.
