During a recent speech in Nashua, New Hampshire, President Joe Biden made a bizarre statement, advising young men to marry into families with more than five daughters. He even shared his own experience, stating that he married into a family of five sisters and that one of them will always love you, which he sees as the biggest advantage of having five daughters-in-law.
But while Biden may have been trying to make a lighthearted joke, his remarks are completely out of touch and display a lack of understanding of the inherent value and worth of women. Suggesting that a man’s biggest advantage in marriage is having a sister-in-law to be on his side perpetuates harmful stereotypes of women as mere objects to serve and support men. It reduces women to nothing more than a shield for their husbands against the other sisters, rather than recognizing them as individuals with their own agency and worth.
Beyond the offensive nature of his comments, Biden’s visit to New Hampshire was to promote his administration’s supposed accomplishments with the Passage of the PACT Act, which expands health care provisions for veterans exposed to toxic materials during their military service. While this may seem like a commendable effort, let’s not forget that it was Biden himself, as a senator, who voted in favor of the Iraq War, which led to the exposure of thousands of soldiers to harmful toxins from burn pits and other means. It is hypocritical for him to now claim credit for providing healthcare to those he helped put in harm’s way in the first place.
Furthermore, the PACT Act includes a provision that allows for presumptive conditions, meaning that certain medical conditions will be automatically considered as service-related without requiring the claimant to provide proof. While this may seem like a helpful measure, it actually undermines the integrity of the claims process and could potentially lead to false claims being approved. It also ignores the fact that many veterans may develop health issues years after their service has ended, making it difficult to establish a direct connection between their service and their medical conditions.
The Biden administration’s focus on the PACT Act also conveniently ignores the many other pressing issues facing veterans, such as mental health care, homelessness, and unemployment. Many veterans are still struggling to access the care and support they need, and Biden’s selective highlighting of this one piece of legislation is a mere PR stunt to paint his administration in a positive light.
While Biden was in New Hampshire, he also attended a fundraiser in Boston, where he was praised by Democratic leaders for his supposed dedication to important issues such as reproductive rights and offshore wind. But let’s not forget that Biden has a history of flip-flopping on the issue of abortion, and that his administration has not taken any significant action to address the climate crisis and transition to renewable energy.

Biden’s comments about marrying into families with five daughters were offensive, his focus on the PACT Act is a self-serving PR move, and his supposed dedication to important issues is questionable at best. It’s time for the American people to demand more from their leader and hold him accountable for his actions, rather than falling for his empty rhetoric and superficial gestures.
