Republican Rep. Claudia Tenney of New York slammed the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) after the announcement of an inspector general report, which disclosed that the tax agency lost millions of data belonging to taxpayers. The Treasury Inspector General for Tax Administration (TIGTA) revealed in its August 8th report that microfilm backups stored in Ogden, Utah, lacked “adequate safeguarding”.
“The IRS should be spending more of its resources on the taxpayers, rather than on administrative tasks,” Tenney stated. “If the IRS is so busy, then why did the Biden Administration implement an act into law that will see the agency hire 87,000 new enforcement agents?”
The Inflation Reduction Act, adopted this August, contained an $80 billion provision for the IRS, which would permit it to hire up to 87,000 new agents. Tenney continued, “It appears the IRS is prioritizing Hunter Biden, whose tax information was leaked earlier this year, instead of focusing on the everyday taxpayers. Whistle-blowers have come forward with evidence of his wrongdoings, yet the agency has yet to take any action, allowing the statute of limitations to expire. The IRS is a complete disaster.”
The agency has consistently been marred by controversy, with ProPublica’s revelation of the tax information of some of the wealthiest Americans in 2021, and a similar leak involving conservative organizations that occurred in 2013. Furthermore, the agency was held accountable for allegedly targeting the Tea Party during the Obama administration, yet the sole central figure of the scandal, Lois Lerner, was never charged.
Under Biden’s new reforms, the IRS has been allowed to hire more staff members, and is now equipped with the funds for modern technology upgrades, but critics are still not convinced, and have called for tougher measures, such as Supreme Court-appointed protection over certain personal information.
Tenney concluded, “The IRS has all the resources it needs to do its job correctly, yet it continues to mishandle sensitive information and neglect the everyday taxpayer. This is unacceptable, and something must be done to ensure that this type of negligence never happens again.”
