A canvassing stop turns into a police call
An unusual scene unfolded in an East Pennsboro neighborhood near Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania. According to court records reported by WHP 580, police were sent shortly after 3 p.m. Sunday to Delwood Drive near Acri Road after an unknown man had been sitting in a vehicle for several hours. When officers made contact, 25-year-old Chimaobim Adedayo Igbojekwe of Aurora, Colorado, opened the door of a silver Ford SUV wearing only a shirt, with his genitals exposed. Igbojekwe reportedly told police he was waiting to hand out flyers for Janelle Stelson’s campaign and pointed to campaign literature inside the SUV. He also reportedly said he did not understand why the exposure was a problem. That is a difficult position to explain in any neighborhood, especially one near a public park.
People were nearby when officers arrived
Police noted that people were already in the area, including a man walking his dog and children riding bicycles. The SUV was parked near a sidewalk and close to the park. Igbojekwe was initially charged with indecent exposure, a second-degree misdemeanor, along with a summary count of disorderly conduct. Magisterial District Judge Jonathan R. Birbeck set bail at $49,000, and Igbojekwe was held at Cumberland County Prison after he could not post it. A later WHP 580 update posted at 9 p.m. on September 30 said court records showed that the indecent-exposure count and the summary disorderly-conduct citation had been withdrawn. Igbojekwe pleaded guilty to a third-degree misdemeanor disorderly-conduct charge.
The incident quickly became a campaign issue
Conservative activist Scott Presler criticized the episode on X and questioned why a canvasser listed as being from Aurora, Colorado, was working in a Central Pennsylvania neighborhood. Presler also warned voters in Cumberland, Dauphin, and York counties not to ignore the incident. The case drew attention because the canvasser said he was working for Stelson’s campaign, and because the police account placed him near families, a sidewalk, and a park. The public record described the original charges and the later guilty plea, but it did not explain why the indecent-exposure count was withdrawn.
Stelson’s campaign faces questions
Stelson, a former WGAL anchor, is in a rematch with Republican Rep. Scott Perry in Pennsylvania’s 10th District after losing by 5,133 votes in 2024. During the campaign, she presented herself as a moderate and promoted a “Republicans for Janelle” coalition that included former Republican Reps. Adam Kinzinger and Barbara Comstock. She also emphasized affordability and an anti-corruption message in a City & State Pennsylvania interview. The campaign has not publicly explained why a Colorado man carrying Stelson flyers was sitting near a park in this condition, or why he told police he saw no problem with it.
