Principal Succumbs to Injuries from Tragic School Shooting – Community Devastated

The principal of Perry High School in Iowa who fought heroically during a mass shooting on Jan. 4, has passed away from injuries inflicted during the attack. Dan Marburger, 56, was among the eight victims of the tragic shooting and had been taken to the hospital in critical condition. His wife Elizabeth shared the heartbreaking news of his passing on Sunday morning.

Elizabeth announced the unfortunate news on a GoFundMe page set up for the family. She described Marburger as more than just a principal, but also a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother, uncle, cousin, and friend. She also shared that Marburger had been the principal of Perry High School since 1995, making his family extend to all those who have walked the halls of the school over the years.

In honor of Marburger, Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds ordered flags across the state to be lowered. Reynolds also released a statement expressing her grief and honoring Marburger’s selflessness and heroism. She stated, “Our entire state is devastated by the news of Dan Marburger’s death. Dan courageously put himself in harm’s way to protect his students, and ultimately gave his own life to save them. He will forever be remembered for his selfless and heroic actions. May he rest in peace.”

The Perry Community School District also released a statement expressing their condolences to the Marburger family. They described Marburger as a tremendous leader and a loving husband, father, and grandfather. The district expressed their heartbreak over the loss of such a devoted and caring colleague. Marburger had been a part of the district for almost three decades, making his presence deeply ingrained in every aspect of the school environment.

During the shooting, Marburger attempted to distract the shooter in order to give students and staff time to escape the building. Ahmir Jolliff, an 11-year-old middle school student, tragically lost his life in the attack while seven others were injured, including Marburger. As of Friday, two of the victims were still in the hospital.

This tragic event has left the entire community in shock and mourning. Marburger’s brave and selfless actions will never be forgotten, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him. The Perry High School community has lost a beloved leader, and his legacy will forever be cherished.
