Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy lit up the internet after a Department of Transportation sponsored YouTube series, “The Great American Roadtrip,” showed a family talk that many parents will recognize. Duffy and his daughter Paloma were discussing college plans when she said she would love to attend Harvard University because of its famous academic reputation and her belief that she would get the best education there. Duffy asked her if she would push him and her mother to let her go if she were accepted, and Paloma said she probably would, adding that if she got in, she felt they “can’t say no.” That is when Dad delivered the line that sent the elite-school fan club reaching for the smelling salts: “Well, me and mom can say no.”

The Concern Was Bigger Than a School Name

The video then moved to Duffy’s wife, Rachel Campos-Duffy, who spoke about the importance of Catholicism in their family’s life and the concern that Harvard could undermine the way Paloma was raised. Sean Duffy told his daughter they had thought carefully about how they raised her and said he worried the school had “professionalized” figuring out how to take “good, young girls” and corrupt their minds. He also made clear that his objection was not that Paloma might someday hold views different from his own. His point was that he wanted her to arrive at her beliefs honestly, not be force-fed one political lane by a campus culture that conservatives have long seen as far more interested in activism than open debate.

Paloma Pushes Back, Dad Answers

Paloma did not just sit there and nod along, which actually made the exchange more interesting. She gently argued that Harvard could give her a well-rounded education, especially since she had already attended a conservative high school. Duffy’s answer was quick and direct. He said the problem is that “they are so good at it,” adding that people can come from a conservative school and a conservative family, only to get “converted and contorted.” That line hit home for a lot of parents who have watched colleges sell themselves as temples of learning while too often acting like ideological car washes, where students go in with a full set of values and come out polished in the approved shade of progressive gray.

The Internet Splits Right on Schedule

Reaction online was exactly what you would expect. Some on the left attacked Duffy, calling his comments dumb and even “Christian nationalist coded,” because apparently a father worrying about his daughter’s moral and political formation now needs a dramatic label. Others on the right praised him as a strong father willing to say out loud what many parents quietly think about elite universities. The Daily Beast also noted the contrast between Duffy’s criticism of Harvard and the number of conservative personalities who call the school their alma mater. Meanwhile, conservative accounts cheered his warning that Harvard pushes a strong left-wing ideology, while critics argued that telling a child Harvard may not be the best fit turns an achievement into an enemy.

A Family Debate Becomes a National One

What made this clip travel so far was not just the Harvard name, although that name still carries enough prestige to make certain people bow like they just saw academic royalty. It was the fact that Duffy framed the issue as a parent’s duty, not a political stunt. He did not say Paloma could never think differently from him. He said he did not want her shaped by a system he believes would only feed her one side. That is a fair debate, and it is one millions of American families are having as tuition, campus culture, faith, politics, and career hopes all collide at the kitchen table. Harvard may impress the cocktail party crowd, but Duffy’s message was simple: parents still get a vote.
