The Gardena Police Department has charged 36-year-old Jessica Chavez with multiple offenses after she allegedly assaulted a firefighter and crashed into an undercover cop vehicle in Los Angeles County on Wednesday. A video of the incident, obtained and shared by ABC 7 News, shows Chavez hitting the firefighter through the window of his car multiple times.
In the footage, Chavez can be seen shouting expletives as the firefighter tries to calm her down. “Hey – we are trying to help here,” he responds, before opening the car door. The video then cuts to Chavez’s car ramming into the police vehicle and fire vehicles.
According to City News Service, eyewitness Frank Rojas saw the whole event unfold. “We were right in front of here, so we could see everything,” he said. “I thought when she was going to drive off, she was going to drive off and that was that.” However, Rojas was shocked when Chavez decided to circle the block twice before hitting the car again. “I was shocked at the fact she decided to even go back and, like, still hit the car,” he added.
In between the cuts in the footage, it appears that the firefighter informed Chavez that he was calling the police. This may have incited her to return to her car and try to flee the scene. It is unclear at this time what initially provoked Chavez’s aggressive behavior.
As for the firefighter, his main concern seemed to be trying to defuse the situation and call for backup. “We are trying to help here,” he can be heard saying in the video. The fact that he was able to remain calm and attempt to reason with Chavez, despite her violent demeanor, is a testament to his professionalism and dedication to his job.
Although no one was hurt in the incident, it serves as a reminder of the dangers that first responders face every day while on the job. They put their lives on the line to help others, and incidents like this only highlight the need for respect and appreciation for their service.

Whether it was due to drugs or alcohol, or some other underlying issue, it is clear that Chavez was not in a stable state of mind. It is important not to jump to conclusions and instead let the authorities handle the situation and determine the appropriate course of action.
What matters most is that no one was seriously injured and that the police were able to apprehend Chavez and take her into custody. The footage serves as a reminder of the unpredictable and often dangerous situations that first responders face, and the bravery and composure they exhibit in the face of such challenges.
