Firings reportedly begin at the intel office
A source familiar with the matter told CNN that firings have started at the Office of the Director of National Intelligence. The same source used the line, “The deep state firings have begun,” which is the kind of sentence that makes bureaucrats clutch their badges and reach for the nearest coffee cup. How many jobs were cut is still unclear, but the timing is plain enough. Bill Pulte, who had been serving as a federal housing regulator, officially started as acting DNI last Friday, and the first reports of cuts came almost immediately after he took over.
Pulte reportedly asked for the employee list early
According to CNN, Pulte showed up to work a day early last Thursday and asked for a list of all employees as he decided whom to fire. He then met with lawyers that evening. That does not sound like a man easing into the job with a welcome basket and a plant for the window. It sounds like someone sent in to trim a bloated operation fast. President Trump has already said he wants to reduce the size of federal intelligence agencies, so this move fits that bigger goal, even if the left will no doubt call it the end of civilization before lunch.
Senate pushback did not stop the move
Pulte’s temporary role came after Senate Republican opposition helped block a plan that would have made it easier for him to serve as acting DNI. Earlier this month, Senators Cassidy, Collins, and Murkowski joined Democrats in backing an amendment from Sen. Mark Warner that would have barred a Senate-confirmed head of another department from serving as acting DNI. The amendment failed 49-49, but the fight showed how much resistance there is to shaking up the intelligence bureaucracy. Trump has also delayed Jay Clayton’s confirmation for the top intel post until the Senate confirms Clayton’s replacement at the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York.
