I think these climate change nuts are starting to grow on me. Not really but I did enjoy watching them terrorize Biden and his little transportation pet. Joe Biden encountered heckles from a climate activist during an address in Arizona on Thursday. The activist was asking for Biden to state officially a climate emergency.
Pete Buttigieg, US Secretary of Transportation, was forced to depart from a policy forum at Baltimore’s Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall on Tuesday. The activists, part of the group Climate Defiance, chanted and repeated slogans such as “Stop Petro Pete”, “End Fossil Fuels”, and “Which side are you on, Pete?”
The activists took issue with two projects of oil transport being reviewed by Buttigieg’s department the Maritime Administration. Specifically, they cited the Sea Port Oil Terminal and Texas GulfLink projects. According to a tweet from Climate Defiance following the event, the activists believe they are “worse than Keystone”.
On stage, an activists accused Pete of “ramming down our throats the Sea Port and GulfLink oil terminals – each worse than Keystone”. They argued that the projects could lead to environmental racism and climate impacts due to the 80 coal plants equivalent of emissions they could produce. They asked Pete to commit to and stop the projects.
Pete was sympathetic to their cause saying that the urgency of climate change means that we will need a good answer for it by the time his kids are old enough to ask. However, he noted that there are still literal climate deniers in Congress who don’t believe that the climate is changing.
The two projects have not yet been approved. The Sea Port Oil Terminal, proposed years ago, received an initial approval by the Maritime Administration last year but required a license for completion. The Texas GulfLink was located off the coast of Texas but has not yet been approved, and has been strongly opposed by environmental groups such as the Sierra Club and Center for Biological Diversity.

Both projects have been met with a wall of opposition, arguing that US needs to decrease dependence on fossil fuels. Environmentalists are hoping to see some progress from the Biden administration and seek them to put forward projects that minimize carbon emissions and create green jobs.
Meanwhile, the majority (US) are just trying to survive this insane economy. I don’t know many people who can afford to jump off of fossil fuels.
