Hundreds of pro-Palestinian protesters descended on Rockefeller Center on Wednesday night during the Christmas tree lighting, sparking clashes with the New York Police Department (NYPD). The protesters carried signs that said “end to genocide” and chanted “river to the sea” and other slogans. Families gathered to celebrate the season were disturbed by the outbursts.
“I had planned my holiday around this event, being a big fan of Christmas. Now I’m walled in by a bunch of terrorist-loving a**holes calling for intifada,” said Jamie Fry, who flew in from the U.K. for the tree lighting. He added that the protests did not make him feel any sympathy for their cause. “Their strategy for sympathy is disruption, but all they’ll get out of me is a big ‘f*** you’,” he commented.
The NYPD had already mobilized ahead of the plans the Palestinian group had announced for the protest, sending in a heavy presence to the event. “They should have shut it down. They lost control of the street. I was shoved, punched, kicked. It’s bulls***,” an officer told the New York Post, while another described the chaos as “complete.” The protesters moved on to the FOX building, where they clashed with the NYPD there too and caused even more disruption.

The pro-Palestinian demonstrators also took aim at President Joe Biden, chanting “Genocide Joe has got to go” due to his support of Israel’s efforts to eliminate the Hamas terror group from Gaza. Witnesses described the scene as “600 protesters surging forward as police rush to regain control of the situation.”
“The Christmas tree brings a message of peace, not conflict. That’s why we’re gathered here today, not to protest but to welcome in the holiday season. None of this mob activity is going to take that away from us,” noted New York resident Lillian Gonzalez, who was disturbed by the protesters’ intrusion.
The U.S. Mirror reported that the NYPD Intelligence and Counterterrorism Bureau said there is a growing sense of risk for terror threats, noting that the nation “continues to face a heightened and dynamic risk environment from a variety of extremists.” This violence at Rockefeller Center underscored the very real danger of a terror attack occurring in public places, an all-too-real possibility in today’s world.

Former Mayor of New York, Bill de Blasio, released a statement on the violence at Rockefeller Center, noting that while he believes in everyone’s right to protest peacefully, “the behavior shown last night at Rockefeller Center was not peaceful. The NYPD is conducting a full investigation to determine the facts of the incident and to hold those responsible accountable.”
He concluded with saying that the “City of New York will not tolerate violence of any kind.” With the NYPD investigation still pending, it remains to be seen what the repercussions will be from this distinct display of disruption and violence.
