Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy Hospitalized Following a Stroke

Murphy Suffered a Stroke During His Son’s Game

Connecticut Democratic Sen. Chris Murphy was hospitalized Friday after experiencing numbness in his arm during his son’s hockey game, according to his office. He was taken to a local hospital, where it was discovered that he had suffered a stroke, and was later transferred to Johns Hopkins for further monitoring. His chief of staff, Allison Herwitt, said he is responding well to treatment, is awake and alert, and is expected to make a full recovery.

Doctors Report Encouraging Progress

Herwitt said doctors are encouraged by Murphy’s progress. The statement did not provide further details about the stroke but said he is awake and alert, responding well to treatment, and expected to make a full recovery.

Hospitalization Interrupts a Busy Political Schedule

Murphy is not up for reelection this year, but he has been traveling across the country to campaign for Democrats. He was expected to be in New Hampshire with Democratic Senate nominee Chris Pappas. His travel has fueled speculation about a possible 2028 presidential run.

Senators Across Party Lines Send Support

Murphy’s illness prompted messages from colleagues across the political spectrum. Democratic Sen. John Fetterman said on social media that his family was rooting for Murphy and his family to have a full and speedy recovery. Republican Sens. Chuck Grassley of Iowa and Pete Ricketts of Nebraska also offered prayers. Democratic Sens. Ben Ray Luján and Chris Van Hollen suffered strokes in 2022 and have since recovered. Fetterman suffered a stroke while campaigning for his Senate seat that same year and now uses adaptive technology in the Senate, including live captioning to help him process conversations.
