Amidst the ongoing crisis at the U.S.-Mexico border, the detrimental effects of illegal immigration on American cities are beginning to surface. The recent decision by a New York City high school to go completely virtual to accommodate over 2,000 illegal migrants is a clear indication of the disastrous consequences of the Biden administration’s lax stance on border control.
The decision to temporarily close James Madison High School in Brooklyn and convert it into an overnight shelter for illegal migrants was announced on Tuesday.
The principal of the school, Jodie Cohen, stated that this step was necessary due to the potential for severe weather conditions at Floyd Bennett Field, where the migrants had previously been housed. But make no mistake, this is a direct result of the overwhelming influx of illegal migrants into the city, with over 160,000 arriving in the past year alone.
The situation has become so dire that even staunchly Democratic Mayor Eric Adams has been compelled to repeatedly ask for federal assistance in dealing with the migrants. He and other mayors of sanctuary cities, such as Denver and Chicago, have appealed to the White House and Congress for extra funding and support to deal with the crisis.
Despite this, the Biden administration has turned a blind eye to the situation, leaving cities to bear the burden of a crisis that they did not create.
The strain on city resources caused by the unchecked influx of migrants is taking its toll. In Denver, Democratic Mayor Mike Johnston has declared that the city will have to significantly cut back on services due to the massive number of migrants it has received—over 34,000. Even in the heart of the Democratic stronghold of New York City, the impact of illegal immigration is evident. Mayor Adams announced a 5% budget cut for all city services in September, citing the overwhelming pressure the city is facing due to the migrant crisis.

In a September event, Mayor Adams expressed his concerns about the future of New York City in the face of this crisis, saying, “Never in my life have I had a problem that I didn’t see an ending to. I don’t see an ending to this… This issue will destroy New York City. Every community in this city is going to be impacted… We have a $12 billion deficit that we’re going to have to cut – every service in this city is going to be impacted.”
The decision to turn a high school into a shelter for illegal migrants is a stark reminder of the damaging effects of the Biden administration’s lenient policies on illegal immigration. It is clear that cities cannot continue to shoulder this burden alone without facing devastating consequences.
