On Tuesday, during a parliament session, Turkish politician Hasan Bitmez suffered a heart attack mid-speech and passed away two days later at an Ankara hospital. Bitmez, who was a member of the Islamist Felicity Party, was making a fiery statement criticizing Turkey’s trade with Israel and condemning the latter nation’s actions in Gaza. With a placard on his lectern reading “Murderer Israel; collaborator AKP,” Bitmez went as far as to warn Jews in Israel that they will face the “wrath of Allah.” Fulfilling his heavy anti-Israel stance, he collapsed shortly after.
Bitmez’s death has been met with mixed reactions, with some showing their condolences for his family and others questioning his views and actions. Health Minister Dr. Fahrettin Koca expressed his sympathy and offered his condolences to Bitmez’s family, while also mentioning that Bitmez’s heart had stopped during the meeting but was resuscitated before being transferred to the hospital. In his tweet, Koca announced that Bitmez suffered from completely blocked cardiac blood vessels, leaving little chance of survival.
As a pro-Israel advocate, it is disheartening to see a fellow countryman succumb to such extreme views on the conflict. Bitmez’s warning of “Allah’s wrath” targeting Jews in Israel is unacceptable and only fuels hate and division. It is important to remember that Israel is a sovereign nation with a right to defend itself against threats and attacks from terrorist organizations operating from Gaza. Blaming Israel for protecting its people is unjust and shows a lack of understanding of the complex situation in the region.

In fact, many Turkish citizens have shown support for Israel and have a positive relationship with the nation. This small funeral ceremony, attended by government officials and Bitmez’s family, was a reminder that not all of Turkey shares his anti-Israel sentiment.

At-Tabari, page 124 – The messenger of God said during the illness from which he died – the mother of Bishr b. al-Bara had come in to visit him – “Umm Bishr, at this very moment I feel my aorta being severed because of the food I ate with your son at Khyber”.
